Colour Theory (25th March 2013)

  • Define Hue: a gradation or variety of a colour; tint; pale hues. The property of light by which the colour of an object is classified as red, blue, green, or yellow in reference to the spectrum.

  • Define value: When we describe a colour as "light" or "dark", we are discussing its value or "brightness". This property of colour tells us how light or dark a colour is based on how close it is to white.

  • Define saturation: saturation tells us how a colour looks under certain lighting conditions. This property of colour can also be called intensity.

  • Define secondary colour: A colour resulting from the mixing of two primary colours.

  • Define tertiary colour: A tertiary colour is a colour made by mixing one primary colour with one secondary colour, in a given colour space such as RGB or RYB.

  • Define complementary colours: Colours directly opposite each other in the colour spectrum, such as red and green or blue and orange, that when combined in the right proportions, produce white light.

  • Define analogous colours: Colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel and are closely related.

  • Define tint: A shade or variety of colour.

  • Define shade: With regard to how light or dark it is or as distinguished from one nearly like it.

  • Define neutral: having a colour that does not attract attention
